API is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited standards developing organization, operating with approved standards development procedures and undergoing regular audits of its processes for Oil and Gas Industries.

There are two kind of Program Certified by API:

- Quality Management System : API Spec Q1

- Product Specification and Standards : API Monogram

API Monogram specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the performance, dimensional and functional interchangeability, design, materials, testing, inspection, welding, marking, handling, storing, shipment and purchasing, of equipments for use in the petroleum and natural gas industries. Examples:

- API 16A For Drill Through Equipment - BOP

- API 6A For Wellhead and Christmass Tree Equipment

- API 650 for Welded Tank for Oil Storage

There are several API monogram for Tank Storage:

¡ API 12 B (Bolted Tanks for Storage of Production Liquids )

¡ API 12D (Field Welded Tanks for Storage of Production Liquids)

¡ API 12 F (Shop Welded Tanks for Storage of Production Liquids)

¡ API 12 P (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Tanks)
